As the recruiter for APG, I spend the majority of my time weeding through resumes and trying to find “the Rockstar” for the job opening at hand. Consequently, I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to resume quality. To assist our blog readers who are considering applying for one of our job opportunities, I’ve put together a list of my top three recommendations for improving your resume.   

1)      Explain your experience:  “If it’s not on your resume, it doesn’t exist.” Don’t assume that a company knows everything you’ve done at previous jobs. The best way for them to know about your work history is to spell it out for them on your resume.  Highlight what you do best.

2)      Keep in simple:  The average time a hiring manager or recruiter looks at a resume is 15 seconds.  Make sure you are able to grab their attention within those first crucial 15 seconds.  Emphasize with relevant examples, and customize your resume to the specific job.

3)      Search Optimization:  Since most resumes are pre screened through a database, focus on including pertinent words or phrases that you want to have noticed related to what you can do.  Pick no more than 10 keywords or phrases and make them bulleted and relevant to the job you are looking for.

Time and Labor Implementation Specialist

Location:  Crystal City, VA

Available:  Immediate

Length of Contract:  2+ years

Position Requirements: 

  • Experience with Oracle  AIM documentation (BR.100), development of functional and  (MD.050), development of testing documents (TE.020, TE.040, TE.120, etc)
  • Experience in the development and execution of SQL-based scripts to support functional and technical trouble shooting, independently developing basic reports and queries
  • Experience with designing, developing, and implementing experience with aligning legacy jobs and responsibilities to custom Oracle Responsibilities to defined Roles
  • Experience in deploying reports using Oracle OBIEE and Noetix
  • Experience configuring and enhancing Oracle Time & Labor functionality to support various DoD required Time Entry Rules, Time Entry validations through control of Tour of Duty functionality, time approvals and other time-entry based workflows
  • Experience in configuring and designing solutions for labor cost capture and accruals and labor cost reporting
  • Experience delivering Oracle Time and Labor training 
  • Expertise and implementation experience in three or more of the following: Oracle 11i Budget to Report, Cost Accounting, Order to Fulfill, Procure to Pay, Time and Labor modules, and Acquire to Retire
  • Expertise in assisting customers to transition from legacy processes to Oracle 11i based solutions
  • Experience/Understanding of DoD related and required Compliance Issues that are necessary in ERP implementations
  • Functional knowledge of Oracle 11i modules included in DAI business functions of Budget to Report, Cost Accounting, Order to Fulfill, Procure to Pay, Acquire to Retire, and Time and Labor
  • Strong customer relationship management skills as this position is working directly with the Agency customer
  • Substantive experience with the Oracle Time and Labor module, to include interfacing with other HR and Payroll systems
  • Knowledge of the implications of processing orders associated with both Working Capital and General Funds and the associated accounting differences
  • Experience providing Order to Fulfill training and post implementation support

Oracle Application Developers—HRMS

 Location:  Remote with limited travel to Washington D.C.

Position Requirements:

  • Extensive experience developing: Oracle HRMS / Oracle Financials (e.g. AP, AR, GL, PA), Oracle iProcurement and Oracle Purchasing
  • Technical Skills:  Oracle PL/SQL, Oracle developer tools (Forms, reports, Discoverer and Workflow), Oracle Application framework, JAVA, and Web Services
  • Ability to work closely with the Development/Maintenance Team lead and other teams (e.g., Functional, client and partners) in the development of new functionalities (extensions) on top of Oracle HRMS and Financial applications.
  • Experience of RICE (Report, Interface, Conversion, Enhancement) components on top of Oracle E-Business applications
  • Programming in Oracle PL/SQL, Oracle Forms, Workflow, JAVA, Web Services
  • Develop lifecycle documentation (e.g., technical specifications)

Project Manager—PMP

Location:  D.C. Metro area or Denver, CO

Openings:  two similar positions available

Length of Contract:  Project Manager for a 3 to 6 month engagement. Must have VMware deployment expertise. 

Length of Contract:  2nd Project Manager for 12 month engagement. Must have Strategic Planning experience and be a strong writer

Press Release: APG Ranks 1947 on the 2010 Inc 5000

August 24, 2010Inc. magazine today ranked APG #1947 on its fourth annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Music website Pandora, convenience store chain 7-Eleven, Brooklyn Brewery, and Radio Flyer, maker of the iconic children’s red wagon, are among the prominent brands featured on this year’s list.

“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.”

The 2010 Inc. 5000, unveiled today on, serves as a unique illustration of the profound changes taking place in the U.S. economy. The Government Services sector showed the biggest gain in terms of the number of companies on the list, up 33% from last year to 335 companies. Government Services was also the second-fastest-growing sector in terms of median revenue growth, posting a 202% gain over the 2006-2009 measuring period. More than half of these companies are based in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The fastest-growing sector by median revenue growth was Real Estate, now just a tiny group of 38 young, small companies, which showed 231% median growth over the period. (There were 121 Real Estate firms on the inaugural Inc. 5000 in 2007.) Business Products & Services is the top industry by number of companies on the list (640) and total revenue ($80.7 billion), while Health is the biggest by total employment (287,726  jobs).

In addition to being ranked 1947 on the overall list, APG came in at #204  in it’s industry, Government Services.

“APG…I think I’ve heard of them before”

Welcome– you made it to APG’s blog!

The title of this posting is something we hear from prospective clients, partners and potential employees too often. The purpose of our shiny new blog is to increase awareness of our company so the next time an APG employee introduces themselves and the company, the reply will be said with certainty, “yes, of course I know about APG!”

So, for those of you who are reading this posting completly new to APG, here is a synopsis of us– in less than 150 words:

Advanced Programs Group (APG) was founded in 2004 with the intent of becoming the leading provider of Oracle consultants to the Federal Government. Achieving several large contract wins over the past few years has leveraged APG to experience significant growth and enabled us to develop an impressive base of business and client relationships across the Civilian, Dept of Defense, and National Intelligence communities within the Federal Government.

Five years later, APG has graduated from the ‘Small Business’ classification and recently moved to a new office located in Northern Virginia. APG has developed into a company that offers more than just Oracle IT Consulting. In 2009, APG expanded its service offerings to include an Information Security practice. Still led by the same entrepreneurial leadership team that founded the company, APG expects to maintain steady growth and continue to expand its services offerings.

For the record, as a company, we respond to “Advanced Programs Group”,  “APG” and  “APGIntel”. We used to go by “IAE Solutions”, but we retired that back in 2007.
